GCT - Grand Canyon Uranium Mining 3-27-11

Mar 27, 2011

EcoFlight and The Grand Canyon Trust conducted overflights with members of the Havasupai tribe, who have lived in the Grand Canyon for generations. For decades, the Havasupai have battled uranium mining that has imposed health risks on their communities and desecrated their sacred sites.

Public lands surrounding the Grand Canyon National Park are ground zero for a new uranium mining boom which is threatening to industrialize the region.  Renewed interest in uranium, due to the price increase in uranium ore, has resulted in thousands of new mining claims, many within ten miles of the Grand Canyon.
