Pioneers - Recommended Wilderness

May 5, 2019

The Borah Peak area (in the Lost River Range) and the Pioneer Mountains area have previously been recommended as wilderness in prior forest plans and have been managed for 40 years to maintain their wilderness characteristics. During the current forest plan revision process, all areas are evaluated from scratch, meaning that previously recommended areas don't automatically maintain their recommended wilderness status and associated interim protections. Given the current political climate, both locally and nationally, the Forest Service is under some pressure to not recommend any additional wilderness in the planning process. It would be a significant blow to lose protection for incredible areas like Borah Peak, which are truly deserving of formal wilderness designation. Additional areas of the Forest, such as the Lemhi Range, are also worthy of recommended wilderness consideration.
