The Pinyon Plain Mine near the Grand Canyon could contaminate groundwater.

The EPA has conducted a study concluding that the Pinyon Plain uranium mine has the potential to contaminate the region’s groundwater. The study raises questions about how the mine could affect the water stored in the Coconino and Redwall/Muav aquifers. Contamination would affect the area’s environment as well as the Havasupai Tribe’s water supply. 

The EPA is recommending additional and sustained water testing in order to measure the potential environmental impact of the Pinyon Plain uranium mine. 

This study comes in the wake of Governor Katie Hobbs’ call for the Forest Service to conduct a supplemental environmental impact study of the Pinyon Plain mine.
