Mission

Examine the Northern Corridor Highway proposal in the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area with Conserve Southwest Utah.

St. George is one of the fastest-growing cities in America and is experiencing traffic congestion, among other growing pains. The proposed four-lane highway would cross the southern portion of the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, potentially negatively impacting threatened species, such as the Mojave Desert Tortoise.

On our short flight, we observed the sprawling growth of the city and the southernmost portion of the Red Cliff National Conservation Area. Under the Northern Corridor Highway proposal, habitat fragmentation would occur and would set a terrible precedent for other public lands. The proposal has already been rejected seven times, most recently in December 2024 due to irreplaceable habitat loss among other negative outcomes. The BLM will now consider the proposal and the public’s comments again.

Alternatives exist that address community needs without bulldozing protected habitats.

Thank you for taking the time to view this issue from the air. We hope that it helps bolster your understanding of the benefits of preserving this area for many generations to come.
