Students tackle Climate Change
Issues: Climate, Student Education
Partners: Earth Justice, Thompson Divide Coalition, Wilderness Workshop
EcoFlight and Wilderness Workshop organized flights with law students from University of Colorado Law Clinic and teamed them up with local high school students from the Roaring Fork Valley over lands within the BLM’s Colorado River Valley Field Office, including the Thompson Divide. As part of a legal settlement that resulted in a revision process for the Resource Management Plan (RMP), the BLM was required to consider climate impacts of oil and gas leasing, and look at closing more areas to oil and gas drilling.
After the flights, the local high school students worked with the CU Law graduate students to provide testimony and first-hand knowledge of the landscape as a key component of the ongoing RMP revision process. The flights empowered local students to speak up for what they value, and furthered their pursuits in environmental law.
