The San Gabriel National Monument is Expanded!

Mission

On May 2nd, President Biden expanded two California national monuments - the San Gabriel Mountains and the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monuments - protecting nearly 120,000 acres of public lands.

We took off to examine the 105,919 acre expansion to the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, on the doorstep of the busy Los Angeles Basin. These natural areas are important for clean air, clean water, and wildlife habitat, and help improve quality of life for the millions of people who live nearby. From the air, the close proximity of the busy city to this wild landscape is clear - the addition to the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument will increase equitable outdoor access for the 18 million people who live nearby. The designation will also safeguard habitat for 160+ rare, threatened, and endangered species, and protect water quality (30% of LA’s drinking water comes from the San Gabriels).

The region is the ancestral homelands of Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians and Gabrieleño Peoples. The protection of these lands ensures remnants from ancient civilizations like petroglyphs and cultural uses of the landscape are preserved in perpetuity.

EcoFlight is honored to have flown the Tribes, environmental and social organizations, and elected leaders working for the protection of such precious places for the last two decades.

Thanks to President Biden, the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument is finally expanded to its original proposed size. The addition of 105,919 acres makes this park accessible to about 90% more Angelenos, greatly increasing outdoor accessibility, specifically for 465,000 nonwhite residents who now live within five miles of these protected public lands!
